Nagging the user in some way has a similar effect, the user might not even want to bother with that and just walk away.

Third party services: Services like Akismet, OOPSpam, Stop Forum Spam and also reCAPTCHA offer third party services to check for spam. This can be very effective, but you are giving user submitted data away to these third parties and are also giving your users up for tracking them.

Captcha’s, reCAPTCHA and Quizz Questions: You are annoying your users and probably sending some of them away. This especially counts for reCAPTCHA for visitors who have third party cookies disabled.

Blacklists: Often running behind the facts. That goes for the way of getting users off that list, and also in getting users on that list.

Referer check: check if the Referer header is set correctly. You can never trust it is set correctly. Modern browsers are limiting the use of Referers, though for now that is mostly for third-party domains.

JavaScript methods: Spammers often (always?) don’t use JavaScript, they just post the form with spammy data. Drawback for this method is that statistics say that about 1 percent of users has JavaScript disabled. Also, some websites have broken JavaScript, which might make the spamfilter break as well.

Activation email for registering users. While it boasts no known vulnerabilities and uses prepared statements for SQL queries, significant risks are introduced by its handling of dangerous functions and output escaping. The presence of the `unserialize` function is a critical concern, especially when combined with a complete lack of capability checks and nonce checks. The taint analysis revealing two high severity flows with unsanitized paths, coupled with 100% of outputs being unescaped, strongly suggests that user-supplied data can be injected into the application and potentially lead to arbitrary code execution or data manipulation. The absence of any recorded vulnerabilities in its history is not a guarantee of safety; rather, it highlights that the plugin may not have been rigorously tested or is potentially overlooked by attackers due to its perceived limited functionality. Overall, the plugin's strengths in SQL sanitization are overshadowed by critical weaknesses in input validation and output escaping, making it a high-risk component.",[303,306,309,312,314
Dangerous function (unserialize) used",15
High severity taint flows with unsanitized paths",12
Outputs are not properly escaped",8
No nonce checks implemented
No capability checks implemented","2026-03-17T00:16:10.394Z
[320],"/wp-content/plugins/wp-check-spammers/wp-check-spammers.php",[],[],[324],"wp-check-spammers.php?ver=
[327],"wpcs-warning",[329],"************ you shouldn't edit below this line!*******************************",[331,332,333,334,335,336],"name="checkserver"","name="email"","name="subject"","name="fromemail"","name="install_temerc"","name="smtp_test"",[],[],[]]
