So at some point on each page (that is, between each

tag) you need to add a tag to let the plugin know what number the footnotes on this page should start at. To do this, you can either simply insert the exact same text as you did the first time and the identifier should simply reference the previous note. Alternatively, if you don’t want to do all that typing again, you can construct a footnote like this:
((ref:1))
and the identifier will reference the footnote with the given number.

Even though it’s a little more typing, using the exact text method is much more robust. The number referencing will not work across multiple pages in a paged post (but will work within the page). On the positive side, the static analysis indicates a clean code base with no dangerous functions, no raw SQL queries, and no file operations or external HTTP requests. The presence of capability checks (3) and the absence of any critical or high-severity taint flows are also encouraging signs. However, the significant concern lies in its vulnerability history. With three known medium-severity vulnerabilities, all of which were Cross-site Scripting (XSS) related, this pattern suggests recurring input sanitization or output escaping issues. While all past vulnerabilities are currently unpatched, the fact that the last vulnerability was in the future (2025-06-19) is likely a data anomaly and should be disregarded. The plugin's attack surface is relatively small, consisting of two shortcodes, but the fact that 35% of its outputs are not properly escaped presents a potential XSS risk, even if not explicitly identified as a critical or high severity taint flow in the current analysis. The lack of nonce checks on any entry points is also a weakness that could be exploited in conjunction with other issues.",[293,296,299
Medium severity vulnerabilities historically",15
Unescaped output detected",5
No nonce checks on entry points","2026-03-16T18:04:57.955Z
[305,306],"/wp-content/plugins/modern-footnotes/modern-footnotes.css","/wp-content/plugins/modern-footnotes/modern-footnotes.js",[],[306],[310,311],"modern-footnotes/modern-footnotes.css?ver=","modern-footnotes/modern-footnotes.js?ver=
[314,315,316,317,318,319,320,321],"modern-footnotes-list","modern-footnotes-list-heading","modern-footnotes-list--show-only-for-print","modern-footnotes-list--hide-for-print","modern-footnotes-list-heading--show-only-for-print","modern-footnotes-list-heading--hide-for-print","modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop","modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop",[],[324,325,326],"data-original-content","data-modern-footnotes-display-number","data-modern-footnotes-content",[],[329],"modern_footnotes_all_posts_data",[331,332,333,334],"<ul class="modern-footnotes-list","<li class="modern-footnotes-footnote ","","
"]
